Self-tapping screws: types and how to choose

A self-tapping screw cuts its own thread in the material, so no pre-cut thread is needed in the base. The TDMI catalog includes A2 stainless steel screws to DIN 7981 (pan head), DIN 7982 (countersunk head), DIN 7504 (with a drill point) and ISO 15481, 15482, 15485 and 15486.

The head type sets the look and the way the screw is driven: a countersunk head sits flush with the surface, a pan head stays above it, and a hex head is driven with a wrench or socket. A screw with a drill point (DIN 7504) can drill through metal on its own, so no pilot hole is needed.

When choosing, consider the material and thickness of the base, the required length, the head type and the operating environment: stainless steel suits damp and aggressive conditions. Sizes and specifications are listed on each product page, and you can request a price from the product card.
